There were some who had to face many problems during the Emergency. One such artist was Kannada film actress Snehalatha Reddy. Snehlata Reddy, born in Andhra Pradesh, was a very famous and very active actress of her time. For whom it is said that they were tortured in many ways in jail. But she never gave up, rather she continued to raise her voice for women’s rights while in jail. His granddaughter Jui Kumar Reddy has shared memories related to him.
Jail was opened in emergency
Snehalatha Reddy was put in jail during the Emergency. It is said in political circles that there was a very good relationship between Snehalatha Reddy and socialist leader George Fernandes. At that time, the noose was tightened on Snehalata Reddy to catch George Fernandes. On 2 May 1976, he was arrested under the dynamite case and sent to Bangalore jail. Here too he continued to be tortured by the jail administration. He was kept in a very small barrack in the jail. There was compulsion to defecate in the open in one corner of the same barrack. Despite living in this condition, she continued to raise her voice in favor of women prisoners.
Snehlatha Reddy had written a diary
Snehalata Reddy also wrote a diary while spending her days in jail. He had shared many things in this diary. Which was based on his bitter experiences in jail. In which it was also written how female prisoners are humiliated. A documentary has also been made on the experiences written in his diary. Snehlatha Reddy was also an asthma patient. In such circumstances, she was forced to sleep on the floor in the jail. Just five days after his release from jail, he had a heart attack and died.
