Apple shocks in China amidst trade war, iPhone shipment decreased by 9% in the first quarter of 2025, India is becoming a new hub

According to the latest data of the Global Market Research firm IDC, Apple’s smartphone shipment in China has fallen by 9 percent in the first quarter of 2025 and has remained 9.8 million iPhones, which was more than 10.7 million a year ago. Apple was the only major smartphone manufacturer to decline in shipment during this period, which highlights its growing struggle in the world’s largest smartphone market.

iPhone shipment collapses, heavy losses in market share

The company’s market share fell faster to 13.7 percent in the last quarter to 13.7 percent. This is the seventh consecutive quarter of a decline for American tech giants in China.

Xiaomi’s big jump, 40% shipment increased

In contrast, Chinese smartphone leader Xiaomi recorded a great increase of 40 percent in the shipment, which reached 13.3 million units. Considering the new government subsidy launched in January, the Chinese smartphone market increased by 3.3 percent during the quarter.

America-China tension becomes a big challenge: IDC report

Wong Wong, senior research manager of the client device at IDC Asia/Pacific, said that the ongoing tension between the US-China has increased the challenges. Wong said, “The tension between the US-China has given up the upset news, but the good thing is that the first quarter growth has given market players a better position to deal with any challenge in the rest of the year.”

Apple’s focus increased on India

Amid Apple’s struggle in China, the company is focusing more on India as manufacturing and export hubs. According to a recent report by the Journal of the Journal of the Journal, Apple is exploring the possibility of increasing iPhone exports to the US from India. Comparatively India faces only 26 percent of American fees, making it a more cost -effective option.

IPhone exports worth Rs 1.5 lakh crore from India in 2024-25

Meanwhile, according to industrial data last week, in the financial year ending 31 March, 2025, Apple India registered a 60 percent increase in iPhone production from its local supply chain, reaching a turnover of about Rs 1.89 lakh crore.

According to Union Minister of Electronics and Information Technology Ashwini Vaishnav, iPhones worth Rs 1.5 lakh crore were exported from India during 2024-25.
