GUWAHATI: The Kamrup Metropolitan District Excise Department seized a large consignment of Meghalaya-made liquor during an early morning operation at Sonapur Toll Plaza on Tuesday, August 11.

Acting on specific intelligence, a team of excise officials intercepted a commercial vehicle at the Sonapur transit point before it could proceed further into Assam. The vehicle, bearing registration number AS01 UC 9545, was found carrying 123 cartons of Indian-Made Foreign Liquor (IMFL) and beer.
Senior Excise Officer Sailendra Pandey confirmed the seizure in Guwahati on Tuesday morning. Assistant Excise Inspector Pritam Purkayastha said the liquor consignment was recovered during the interception carried out by the Kamrup Metro Excise team.
Kamrup District Excise Superintendent Debajit Nath said the operation marked a significant move to curb liquor smuggling along the Assam-Meghalaya border. Officials suspect the consignment was being transported through the interstate route to exploit differences in liquor prices and excise regulations between Assam and Meghalaya.
According to officials said the seizure could help prevent a substantial loss of revenue to the state exchequer.
The seizure comes amid ongoing discussions between Assam and Meghalaya over liquor pricing and excise-related matters. Authorities are closely monitoring the movement of liquor across the interstate border as part of efforts to prevent illegal trade.
The Excise Department has initiated a further investigation to trace the source of the seized liquor and identify those involved in its transportation. Surveillance has also been intensified at key entry points along the Assam-Meghalaya border to prevent similar attempts in the future.
