GUWAHATI: The Assam government has prohibited strikes by employees engaged in the state's oil and gas sector for six months under the Essential Services Maintenance (Assam) Act, 1980, citing public interest and the need to ensure uninterrupted essential services.

In a notification, the Governor of Assam exercised powers under Section 3 of the Essential Services Maintenance (Assam) Act, 1980, to impose the ban with effect from July 28. The order will remain in force for six months or until further orders.
The prohibition applies to officers, workmen, contract labourers, tanker drivers and khalasis engaged in services connected with the oil and gas sector across the state.
According to the notification, the order covers services in oil fields, refineries, and establishments or undertakings involved in the production, supply, or distribution of petroleum, petroleum products, and natural gas.
