AIUDF candidate Badruddin Ajmal finished second with 39.34% of the vote share, while the Congress candidate secured 1,29363 EVM votes, accounting for around 9%.
Reacting to the victory, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma thanked Prime Minister Narendra Modi and credited the party’s leadership for the win.
“Under the leadership of Hon’ble Prime Minister Shri @narendramodi ji, @BJP4India has secured a decisive victory in the Nagaon Lok Sabha by-election, a seat previously held by the Congress,” Sarma wrote on X.
“Our candidate Shri Devashish Sharma has emerged victorious in a seat not traditionally considered our stronghold, with the Cong pushed to third place,” he added.
A total of 15 candidates contested the bypoll, which recorded a voter turnout of 76.19% on October 6.
The by-election was necessitated after Congress MP Pradyut Bordoloi resigned from the Lok Sabha and successfully contested the Dispur Assembly seat on a BJP ticket earlier this year.
The Nagaon constituency has 19.05 lakh electors, including 9.43 lakh women and 50 third-gender voters. Voting was conducted across 2,312 polling stations.
