Assam Electricity Bills to Increase Between November and March to Recover Past Costs

GUWAHATI: Electricity bills in Assam will rise slightly in the coming months after the Assam Electricity Regulatory Commission (AERC) allowed the Assam Power Distribution Company Limited (APDCL) to recover about ₹155.59 crore in unrecovered power purchase costs between November 2026 and March 2027.

The increase is a surcharge on bills, not a change in the base tariff, which was kept unchanged for FY 2026-27 in March.

The amount covers higher costs of buying power from April to August 2026. It was not recovered on time, and AERC cited flood-related disruptions as a reason for the delay. In its October 30 order, the Commission relaxed its fuel and power purchase price adjustment rules so APDCL can collect the money over the remaining months of the financial year.

APDCL had proposed a reduced rate of ₹0.05 per unit for Jeevan Dhara and Domestic-A consumers using up to 120 units a month, while other categories would pay higher rates. AERC did not fix the month-wise schedule and left it to APDCL, asking it to consider the impact on consumers.

AERC said the relaxation is a one-time measure and not a precedent. The exact rates for each category will be known once APDCL issues its billing notice.
