GUWAHATI: The Assam government is working on a plan to establish a government rehabilitation centre in every district to provide treatment to people affected by drug addiction and help them return to normal life, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said on Tuesday, September 15.

Speaking at a press conference, Sarma said the government would also strictly scrutinise private rehabilitation centres operating in the state.
“We will very strictly scrutinise the private rehab centres. This was discussed yesterday as well,” Sarma said.
The Chief Minister said the government was preparing a plan to ensure that people seeking rehabilitation would not have to depend on private centres.
“We are making a plan for the government so that there is no longer a need for private rehab centres,” he said.
Sarma also referred to complaints regarding drug use inside some private rehabilitation centres. “There are many complaints from them. They consume drugs right there again, and this complaint has been continuously coming,” he said.
The discussions were held during the two-day District Commissioners’ Conference in Jorhat, which concluded on September 15.
