Former Governor and Educationist DY Patil Dies at 90 in Kolhapur


 

GUWAHATI: Former governor and educationist Dnyandeo Yashwantrao Patil, popularly known as DY Patil, died in Kolhapur on Tuesday, August 4. He was 90.

A recipient of the Padma Shri in 1991, Patil was the founder of the D Y Patil Group, which runs more than 150 educational institutions, including deemed universities in Mumbai, Navi Mumbai, Pune and Kolhapur.

Patil served as the Governor of Tripura from 2009 to 2013 and later as the Governor of Bihar from 2013 to 2014. He also held additional charge as the Governor of West Bengal in 2014.

Born on October 22, 1935, in Kolhapur, Patil began his political career with the Congress. He served as the mayor of Kolhapur from 1957 to 1962 and was elected as an MLA from the Panhala constituency in 1967 and 1972.

After leaving active politics, Patil focused on education and philanthropy, establishing institutions across Maharashtra and other parts of the country. He later joined the Nationalist Congress Party in 2018 after decades of association with the Congress.

Details of his funeral arrangements are awaited. Tributes from political leaders and members of the education community are expected as news of his death spread.
