GUWAHATI: Preparations are underway at Fatashil Ambari GMC New Colony in Guwahati for what is being billed as the tallest Ganesh idol ever installed in the Northeast, a 45-foot statue of Lord Ganesh along with a tribute to late Assamese singer Zubeen Garg, remembered widely as "The Voice of Assam."

The pandal is being jointly organised by Dr. B.R. Ambedkar Youth Club and the Telugu Association Assam, with support from the Fatashil Panchayat Committee. The theme design places the idol at the centre of a structure flanked by traditional Assamese instruments, dhol, pepa (buffalo-horn pipes) and taal (cymbals), while cut-out tributes to Zubeen Garg, shown performing with a guitar, stand on either side of the entrance in a nod to his decades-long musical legacy.
The organisers had previously drawn attention for their 40th anniversary celebrations last year, when they installed a 41-foot idol themed around Operation Sindoor, also claimed at the time to be the tallest in the region. This year's idol adds four feet to that height and shifts the theme to honour Garg, the singer-composer-actor who died in September 2025 and remains one of Assam's most celebrated cultural icons.
Ganesh Chaturthi will be celebrated across India on September 14 this year, with the Fatashil Ambari pandal expected to draw large crowds of devotees through the festival period.
