GUWAHATI: A patient monitor reportedly exploded inside Medical Intensive Care Unit 2 (MICU 2) at Gauhati Medical College and Hospital (GMCH) late Saturday night, following which around 10 patients were shifted to MICU 1 and the General ICU as a precautionary measure.

The incident occurred at around 11.50 pm. All other patients were reported to be safe, and the situation was brought under control by the hospital authorities.
Reports had earlier suggested that a patient identified as Tirki died in connection with the incident. However, the GMCH superintendent clarified that the patient had died before the monitor explosion and that the two incidents were not linked.
According to the superintendent, Tirki died at around 11 pm, nearly 50 minutes before the monitor exploded, and the death certificate had already been issued before the incident.
The superintendent further said the patient's body was kept at the hospital overnight as the family faced difficulties arranging transportation at night due to higher costs.
A short circuit is suspected to be one possible cause of the explosion, although the exact cause is yet to be established.
