GUWAHATI: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Monday, September 28, said that police would investigate all angles into the death of Gauhati University student Nimisha Thakuria, including her social media statements and posts, phone calls and her parents’ accounts.

Speaking to reporters, Sarma urged people to prioritise their safety and uphold family values while assuring that police would take appropriate action.
The Chief Minister also stressed that Nimisha was an adult and not a minor.
Nimisha was a citizen of the Jalukbari constituency, where Sarma is the MLA.
The 22-year-old Sociology student was found unconscious at a homestay in Guwahati’s Azara area early Saturday morning. She was later declared brought dead at a hospital, prompting a police investigation into the circumstances surrounding her death.
Nimisha was a resident of Dharapur and had gone to the homestay with 26-year-old Asif Ali, who was detained by police from Garigaon as part of the investigation.
Ali had told Guwahati Police that Nimisha died by suicide. Police, however, said they would continue their investigation and would not accept Ali’s version without verification.
According to homestay staff, Nimisha and Ali had visited the homestay occasionally.
