GUWAHATI: The Special Task Force (STF) of Assam Police arrested two persons in Tamulpur district after recovering two elephant ivory tusks weighing a combined 4.06 kg during an operation at Bangalipara on the night of August 7.

The accused have been identified as Gwhwm Basumatary (29), and Swdwbma Badimatary (23), both residents of Tamulpur.
According to the STF, the operation was launched based on reliable intelligence about the illegal possession and sale of elephant ivory. The team recovered two tusks weighing 2.09 kg and 1.97 kg from the accused.
A preliminary enquiry found that the duo was allegedly attempting to sell the ivory for approximately ₹6 lakh, an STF official said.
Further investigation is underway to ascertain the source of the ivory and identify others who may be involved in the illegal trade.
