In a televised statement, Starmer said he had accepted that Labour no longer believed he was the right person to lead the party into the next general election and that he accepted the verdict “with good grace”. He also confirmed that he had informed King Charles III of his decision.
Starmer said he would step down as leader of the Labour Party and had asked the party’s National Executive Committee to begin the process of selecting his successor. Nominations for the leadership contest are scheduled to open on July 9.
The announcement follows a decisive by-election victory by rival Andy Burnham in north-west England, adding to pressure on Starmer’s leadership within the party.
