The company said users can begin reserving usernames now, which will be activated once the feature is rolled out later this year. The update is aimed at offering users an additional layer of privacy, particularly when connecting with new contacts or joining group conversations.

Once enabled, the feature will allow users to share a username instead of a phone number when initiating conversations, reducing the need to disclose personal contact details.

Announced on Monday, June 29, the move comes as WhatsApp prepares for a global rollout of the system, citing growing demand for alternative identity options across its user base of more than three billion people.

Users will be able to choose custom usernames or use an in-app generator to find available options. Creators, small businesses and organisations will also be able to claim matching usernames with their Instagram or Facebook profiles to maintain consistent branding across platforms.

According to WhatsApp, the system has been designed with privacy safeguards, including the absence of a public directory or search function. Users will only be able to contact others if they already know the exact username.

The company also said an optional “username key” will be introduced, giving users additional control over who can initiate contact.

Once the feature is activated, users who opt in will no longer have their phone numbers displayed when messaging someone for the first time.

To reserve a username, users must update to the latest version of WhatsApp and navigate to Settings > Account > Username.

The feature will be rolled out gradually over the coming months, with users receiving in-app notifications when it becomes available in their region.
