The accused, identified as Shamim Ahmed, was apprehended from Lahowal in Assam’s Dibrugarh district. He had been absconding since the tragic incident, first fleeing to Shillong and then to Dibrugarh. The investigators tracked his movements after his mobile phone was briefly switched on earlier in the day.
Acting on this lead, a police team located and detained him, following which he was brought to Noonmati Police Station. Officials said the accused will be produced before the court today.
The accident took place in the early hours of Sunday, at around 4 am, in the Mathgharia area of Guwahati. The car driven by Ahmed rammed into a parked truck at 96 km/h.
The victims were identified as Puja Saha (26) from Goalpara, Akanksha Saikia (23) from Sivasagar, and Armina Ahmed. While two of them died on the spot, the third succumbed to her injuries later at a hospital despite efforts to save her.
GPS data revealed that the four-wheeler vehicle roamed around different areas of the city till 11 PM, following which, the car's movement was static for the next four hours. The trio then went to a bar inside a mall with Shamim till 3 AM. All four individuals left the bar shortly after paying a bill of ₹19,000.
After exiting from the mall, the four individuals again went for a drive in different locations of the city including GS Road and Zoo Road with the car cruising at a high speed of 135 km/h before the fatal crash.
The car was rented out by Pankaj Kumar Dutta of Dhemaji to another person and Shamim had taken the vehicle from that individual.
