GUWAHATI: The elephant safari at Kaziranga National Park will remain closed for tourists from May 1 until further notice, as authorities prepare for the upcoming monsoon season and adverse weather conditions.

According to an official notice issued by the Eastern Assam Wildlife Division dated Monday, April 27, the suspension will apply to the Western Range at Bagori and the Kaziranga Range at Kohora, two of the park’s most visited zones for elephant safaris.

The closure is part of routine seasonal measures undertaken to ensure the safety of both tourists and wildlife during the monsoon months. Heavy rainfall and waterlogging often make forest areas inaccessible and unsafe for safari operations.

Reports added that while elephant safaris will be halted, jeep safaris are expected to continue for tourists until mid-May, subject to weather conditions.

Kaziranga National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, typically shuts down most of its tourism activities between June and September every year due to flooding caused by the Brahmaputra river during the monsoon.
