GUWAHATI: Arunachal Pradesh has secured its first Wetland of International Importance under the Ramsar Convention, with Glaw Lake being designated as the state's inaugural Ramsar Site. The recognition marks a significant milestone for the state's conservation efforts while taking India's total number of Ramsar sites to 101.

Announcing the development, Union Environment, Forest and Climate Change Minister Bhupender Yadav said the recognition is a significant step towards strengthening biodiversity conservation, water and climate security, and sustainable livelihoods.
Located within the Kamlang Tiger Reserve and Wildlife Sanctuary in the Eastern Himalayas, Glaw Lake is a pristine freshwater wetland renowned for its rich biodiversity.
The lake is fed by perennial mountain streams and is surrounded by dense forests, with more than 150 tree species and 49 orchid species recorded within the site and its catchment area.
The Ramsar designation is expected to boost conservation efforts while promoting the sustainable management of the ecologically sensitive wetland. It also underscores India's continued commitment to protecting wetlands of international importance under the Ramsar Convention.
