President Droupadi Murmu presented the gallantry award to Rifleman Dutta of the 33 Assam Rifles in recognition of his bravery and operational excellence.

According to official information, the incident took place in September 2025 while Dutta and his team were returning from flood relief operations in the Imphal Valley of Manipur. Their vehicle came under a sudden ambush by armed anti-national elements, who opened intense fire on the convoy.

Despite the hostile attack, Dutta remained calm and successfully drove the vehicle out of the killing zone under heavy gunfire, ensuring the safe evacuation of eight fellow soldiers and preventing what could have been a major loss of life.

The Chief Minister's Office hailed the achievement as a proud moment for Assam, noting that Dutta's courage and dedication to duty had brought honour to the state. Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma also paid tribute to the soldier's valour and service to the nation.

The Shaurya Chakra is India's third-highest peacetime gallantry award and is conferred for acts of bravery, courage and self-sacrifice away from the battlefield. Dutta's actions during the Manipur ambush have been recognised as an example of exceptional courage under fire and devotion to duty.
