GUWAHATI: The Assam government plans to recruit around 15,000 to 20,000 youths into the Assam Police over the next five years as part of its initiative to provide government employment to two lakh youths, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said on Wednesday, September 2.

Sarma was speaking at the Passing Out Parade of 32 Deputy Superintendents of Police (Probationers) and 371 Constables of the Communication Branch at the Lachit Borphukan Police Academy in Dergaon, marking the successful completion of their training.
The Chief Minister said around 21,000 personnel have already been recruited into the Assam Police over the past five years, significantly strengthening the force and making it younger and more responsive. He said new officers and constables have been recruited every year through a transparent process, helping the police force move towards minimal vacancies and become a younger and professionally equipped organisation.
The 32 Deputy Superintendents of Police completed 52 weeks of basic training, including a two-week orientation programme at the Lachit Borphukan Police Academy and two months of specialised training at the North Eastern Police Academy in Meghalaya.
During their training, the probationers received instruction in the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita, Bharatiya Sakshya Adhiniyam, POCSO Act, Arms Act, NDPS Act, cybercrime, forensic science and child protection. They were also trained in digital platforms such as Assam Police Seva Setu, along with practical training in weapon handling, horse riding and other aspects of policing.
Sarma expressed confidence that the comprehensive training would prepare the newly inducted personnel to become modern, technologically equipped, professionally competent and people-oriented members of the Assam Police. He said the training would strengthen their ability to respond to evolving challenges in internal security and modern policing.
The Chief Minister also highlighted the state government’s efforts to strengthen the infrastructure and training capabilities of the Lachit Borphukan Police Academy, saying it has earned recognition at the national level. He said several states have approached the Assam government seeking training facilities for their police personnel at the academy.
Sarma said the state government would facilitate training programmes for police forces from other states according to the requirements of the Assam Police, with the aim of transforming the academy from a state-level institution into a national-level centre of excellence in police training.
He added that the government would continue to invest in the academy’s development, including infrastructure and sports training facilities. He also announced that the Assam Police’s 112 emergency response service will be launched from the Lachit Borphukan Police Academy.
Calling for a zero-tolerance approach towards crimes against women, Sarma stressed the need to ensure the safety and security of women across the state. He said Assam should emerge as a unique example in the country in terms of women’s safety.
He also called on the Assam Police to continue sustained action against child marriage and polygamy, and said the force should work over the next five years towards eliminating crimes against women and children and establishing Assam as a state firmly rooted in social justice.
Panchayat and Rural Development Minister Atul Bora, Women and Child Development Minister Ajanta Neog, MP Kamakhya Prasad Tasa, MLAs Biswajit Phukan and Mridul Dutta, Director General of Police Harmeet Singh, Additional Chief Secretary of the Home Department Ajay Tiwari and several other senior officials were present at the programme.
