GUWAHATI: The Assam Cabinet has approved a policy requiring police verification of candidates appointed to government service, with the verification to be completed within six months of their appointment.

The verification will cover the candidates’ character, antecedents, nationality and the genuineness of the documents submitted by them. The decision is aimed at bringing Assam’s existing procedure for government appointments in line with directions of the Supreme Court.
To avoid delays in appointments, the Cabinet has also approved the continuation of the policy under which selected candidates submit notarised affidavits. Candidates can proceed with their appointments on the basis of these affidavits, while police verification will subsequently be conducted for regularisation of their appointments within the stipulated six-month period.
The move seeks to ensure compliance with the Supreme Court’s directions while preventing delays in the appointment of selected candidates to government service.
