GUWAHATI: An inter-ministerial central team will soon visit Assam to assess the damage caused by the ongoing floods, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said on Wednesday, July 22 after speaking with Union Home Minister Amit Shah.

In a post on X, Sarma said the Union Home Minister assured the state of the Centre's support and informed him that the team would evaluate the flood-affected areas to determine the assistance required for relief and rehabilitation efforts.
The floods have claimed 41 lives so far and affected lakhs of people across the state. According to the Chief Minister, over 9 lakh people in more than 1,800 villages across 25 districts have been impacted.
Sarma said the floods were triggered by upstream cloudbursts along with heavy rainfall, causing extensive damage in several districts. Rescue and evacuation operations are being carried out by the Indian Air Force, the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and state agencies.
The state government has established more than 148 relief camps, where nearly 30,000 people are taking shelter. Relief materials, including food, drinking water and other essentials, are being distributed in the affected areas.
The Chief Minister also said the Assam government is working with the Centre on a long-term rehabilitation plan for affected families. He added that discussions with neighbouring states would be initiated after the flood situation improves to strengthen coordination on managing the impact of upstream flooding and similar disasters.
