GUWAHATI: Senior BJP leader Chandramohan Patowary was sworn in as the Pro-tem Speaker of the 16th Assam Legislative Assembly on Friday, May 15.

The oath of office was administered by Assam Governor Lakshman Prasad Acharya at a ceremony held at Raj Bhavan in the presence of cabinet ministers, newly elected MLAs, and senior government officials.
With his appointment as Pro-tem Speaker, Patowary will preside over the initial proceedings of the newly constituted Assembly. His responsibilities include administering the oath to newly elected legislators and overseeing the election of the Speaker of the House.
The swearing-in ceremony witnessed the participation of several senior leaders of the state government and members of the legislative assembly.
The appointment comes ahead of the inaugural session of the 16th Assam Legislative Assembly formed after the recently concluded 2026 Assembly elections.
