GUWAHATI: An injured wild elephant in Sonitpur’s Rangapara has been under continuous treatment and monitoring for the past month, the Assam Forest Department said following concerns raised by a viral video on social media.

The video showed the male elephant struggling with a severe leg injury near Kacharigaon Tea Estate, prompting animal lovers and social media users to seek urgent medical intervention.
Responding to the concerns, Assam Environment and Forest Minister Jayanta Mallabaruah said the elephant was already receiving medical care from the Forest Department in coordination with a veterinary expert from the Wildlife Trust of India (WTI) and the Block Veterinary Officer, Dhekiajuli.
According to veterinarian Dr Pranjit Basumatary, the elephant has gradually started putting weight on its injured leg, indicating a positive response to treatment.
Forest officials are administering prescribed medicines by mixing them with bananas, while the wound is being cleaned and dressed as advised by veterinarians.
Officials have also attempted to guide the elephant away from the populated area towards Sonai Rupai Wildlife Sanctuary.
The Forest Department said the elephant’s health, movement and response to treatment will continue to be closely monitored, with further intervention to be undertaken as required.
