Fuel Prices in Guwahati Surge as Petrol Touches ₹101, Diesel at ₹92

GUWAHATI: Fuel prices in Guwahati crossed the ₹100 mark on Friday, May 15, after the Centre implemented a nationwide hike in petrol and diesel rates amid rising global crude oil prices linked to the escalating West Asia conflict.

With the revised rates coming into effect from 6 am, petrol in Guwahati now costs ₹101.20 per litre, up from ₹98.19, while diesel prices increased from ₹89.46 to ₹92.50 per litre.

The latest revision follows a nationwide increase of ₹3.14 per litre in petrol and ₹3.11 per litre in diesel, marking the first significant hike in retail fuel prices in nearly four years.

The surge in domestic fuel prices comes against the backdrop of soaring international crude oil rates and growing disruptions in global energy supply chains due to tensions in West Asia. Reports suggest that public sector oil marketing companies had been incurring daily losses of around ₹1,600 crore as they absorbed rising import costs without immediately passing them on to consumers.

Despite sustained pressure from global markets, the Centre had earlier refrained from revising fuel prices in an effort to contain inflation, as higher fuel costs often trigger a rise in transportation expenses and essential commodity prices.
