GUWAHATI: In a major relief to a group of BHMS students of Swahid Jadav Nath Homoeopathic Medical College & Hospital (SJNHMCH), Panjabari, the Gauhati High Court has allowed them to continue their internship programme without appearing in the 4th Year BHMS Final Examination scheduled for June 2026.

The Court also directed that the students be paid stipend during the continuation of their internship.
The matter arose after the Srimanta Sankaradeva University of Health Sciences and the college authorities declared the students’ 4th BHMS examination “null and void”, citing the students’ alleged failure to maintain the mandatory six-month gap between passing the 3rd BHMS examination and appearing for the 4th BHMS examination.
However, counsel appearing for the students argued before the Court that the situation had been caused due to delays on the part of the University and college authorities themselves.
Court records showed that although the 3rd BHMS supplementary examinations were conducted in July 2024 and January 2025, the results were declared much later, on November 14, 2024 and March 5, 2025 respectively, reportedly because of delays in evaluation and scrutiny of answer scripts sent outside the State.
Documents submitted before the Court also revealed that an enquiry committee had been formed by the University to examine the matter. The University informed the Court that Deputy Controller of Examinations Dr. Pulak Deb had been suspended in connection with the incident. It was also stated that the Assam Government had suspended responsible faculty members of the college.
During the hearing, the State authorities, including SSUHS and the college administration, reportedly admitted before the Court that lapses on their part had caused hardship to the students.
Taking note of the matter, the Gauhati High Court, while issuing notice to the respondents on May 20, 2026, directed that the students be allowed to continue their internship without appearing in the upcoming 4th Year BHMS Final Examination.
