A top police official told the media that a suo motu case has been registered and further probe is underway.

According to the youth, they were looted of ₹21.85 lakh in cash and five mobile phones near the Radisson Blu Hotel area in Guwahati on Thursday afternoon. They claimed they were returning from Umsning in Meghalaya after selling an excavator and were carrying a large amount of cash when they were intercepted and robbed.

The youth further alleged that the dacoits posed as security personnel and were dressed in army-style clothing, caps, and uniforms resembling military attire. They allegedly stopped the vehicle on the pretext of conducting a drug search operation and accused the victims of involvement in drug-related activities.

“During interrogation, we found them spinning a web of lies. They later confessed that they had smuggled cattle from the Bezera area to Shillong in Meghalaya. They actually collected money in exchange for those cattle from Shillong,” the police official said.

However, police denied the allegations and claimed that the five youth and the alleged dacoits were hand in glove.

“In the footage we examined, none of those people were seen wearing uniforms, contrary to the claims made by the youth,” the police official added.
