GUWAHATI: An alleged incident of assault at Gauhati Medical College and Hospital (GMCH) has triggered concern after a patient’s family accused hospital staff of misconduct at the CN Centre late on Tuesday night, April 29.
Speaking to GPlus, an official from Bhangagarh Police Station said that Pankaj Biswas, who had been referred from Diphu Medical College and Hospital for advanced treatment, was brought to GMCH in critical condition and admitted to the CN Centre. Doctors reportedly advised a series of medical tests soon after his arrival.
The situation reportedly turned hostile when there was a delay in processing payments at the hospital counter. Family members alleged that staff behaved rudely during the process, while one doctor has also been accused of inappropriate conduct.
The matter escalated further when two trolley pullers, identified as Hirak Das and Rahul Ali, allegedly attacked the patient’s relatives and damaged a mobile phone belonging to one of them. The family, residents of Lanka, also claimed they were threatened and told not to return to the hospital if they were unable to afford treatment.
Amid the chaos, the patient’s relatives rushed to Bhangagarh Police Station to file a formal complaint, leaving the critically ill patient in a vulnerable condition.
Hospital authorities swung into action after the incident came to light. Acting on directions from the GMCH Superintendent, the Deputy Superintendent reached the police station and facilitated the patient’s return to the CN Centre via ambulance to ensure continuation of treatment.
A probe has been launched to uncover further details into the matter.
