GUWAHATI: While Guwahati has witnessed the construction of several new flyovers in recent years, concerns are mounting over the condition of one of the city's oldest elevated roads- the Noonmati-Narengi flyover.

Constructed in 1991, the flyover is a key arterial link connecting Bamunimaidam and Noonmati with Geetanagar, Mathgharia, Narengi and Six Mile, and is used by thousands of commuters every day.
Despite being in service for over three decades, the flyover has not undergone any major restoration or rehabilitation work, raising questions about its structural condition and long-term safety.
Visible signs of deterioration have become a cause for concern among daily commuters, many of whom say the ageing infrastructure requires urgent attention before the situation worsens.
The concerns come at a time when the city has been expanding its road infrastructure through the construction of new flyovers aimed at easing traffic congestion. However, residents argue that equal priority should be given to maintaining older bridges and flyovers that continue to carry heavy traffic.
With the flyover playing a vital role in connecting eastern and central parts of Guwahati, commuters have urged the authorities to conduct a comprehensive structural assessment and undertake necessary repair and maintenance work to ensure public safety.
