GUWAHATI: This year’s Durga Puja celebration will explore the theme of biodiversity, with the pandal and idol designed to highlight the richness and importance of nature and its diverse ecosystems.

The celebration, marking its 76th year, will feature a 20-foot traditional Durga idol being brought from West Bengal. The idol is being crafted by idol maker Pijush Bag, while the pandal decoration is being handled by Tapas Sarkar and Dipankan Das. Chanku Das is overseeing the lighting arrangements.
Pandal construction began on August 29, with the idol expected to arrive from West Bengal on September 12 with around 90 per cent of the work completed. The remaining work will be carried out locally ahead of the puja.
As per traditional rituals, Chokhu Daan, also known as Netra Daan, will be performed on the day of Mahalaya, marking the ceremonial opening of the goddess’s eyes during the Matri Paksha period.
The puja has been planned with a total budget of around Rs 20 lakh. The celebration is being organised as part of the 76th-year Durga Puja observance by the Maligaon Kalibari Durga Puja Committee.
