GUWAHATI: A major landslide triggered by continuous heavy rainfall caused extensive damage in Rimbi village under the Yuksom-Tashiding constituency of Sikkim’s Gyalshing district on Thursday night, September 24. Houses, government quarters and other properties were reportedly washed away in the incident. No loss of life has been reported so far.

Sikkim Chief Minister Prem Singh Tamang on Friday said the situation in Rimbi remained serious following the landslides triggered by torrential rain. He said authorities had been directed to remain on high alert, closely monitor the situation and take all necessary measures to ensure public safety.
The landslide affected parts of Rimbi village in West Sikkim, triggering a major mudslide as large quantities of mud, rocks and debris moved downhill. The incident has raised concerns among residents as continued rainfall poses further risks to nearby homes, properties and connectivity.
The fresh incident comes amid a spell of intense rainfall that has triggered landslides, damaged roads and disrupted connectivity at several locations across Sikkim and the neighbouring Darjeeling Hills.
Heavy rain in the Darjeeling Hills has also caused damage at several locations. Rain that began on Thursday night and continued into the early hours of Friday damaged a temporary causeway bridge over the Rangbhang River at Tabakoshi, further affecting local connectivity.
