GUWAHATI: Kargil Vijay Diwas was observed in Guwahati on Sunday, July 26, with a commemorative programme at the State War Memorial at Dighalipukhuri, where serving defence personnel, veterans, families of martyrs, NCC cadets, students and members of the public paid tribute to the soldiers who laid down their lives during the 1999 Kargil War.

The event was also attended by Lakshman Prasad Acharya, the governor of Assam.
The event was organised by the Directorate of Sainik Welfare, Assam to mark India's victory in the Kargil War and honour the courage and sacrifice of the Indian Armed Forces.
Floral tributes were paid to the fallen soldiers, with speakers recalling the bravery, patriotism and commitment displayed by the armed forces in defending the country's sovereignty and territorial integrity during the conflict.
Addressing the gathering, Assam Governor Lakshman Prasad Acharya said the sacrifices of the Kargil heroes continue to inspire generations to uphold the values of courage, discipline and national service. He also urged young people to draw inspiration from the lives of the soldiers and contribute towards nation-building.
During the programme, the families of several Kargil martyrs were felicitated in recognition of their sacrifices. Those honoured included the parents of Captain Jintu Gogoi, Vir Chakra; the mother of Gunner Udhab Das; the wife of Naik Someswar Saikia, Shaurya Chakra; the mother of Sepoy Rupom Gogoi, Shaurya Chakra; and the wife of Havildar Padam Bahadur Shrestha.
The Governor also interacted with veterans, serving defence personnel and the families of martyrs, expressing gratitude for their service and sacrifice.
Senior officers of the Armed Forces, defence veterans, civil administration officials, ex-servicemen, NCC cadets and students attended the programme.
The event concluded with patriotic cultural performances and a pledge to uphold the ideals of national unity, integrity and service embodied by the Indian Armed Forces.
