GUWAHATI: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Wednesday, August 12, said the state government is working on plans to replicate its Model Housing Colony project in flood-hit areas to create self-sustaining settlements with essential facilities.

Addressing a press conference, Sarma said the government is in discussions with the Centre and social service organisations to explore the possibility of developing model housing colonies in areas where houses have been completely damaged by the floods.
“There are several areas where there has been 100% house damage. Especially Nepali Khuti, Kamal Basti, Railway Station, Bamun Pukhuri, and so on,” Sarma said.
He said the model housing initiative would be considered after flood-affected residents receive primary assistance and are able to return home. The government would then assess the possibility of developing these areas with better housing and essential infrastructure.
Sarma also said the government is in talks with the National Dairy Development Board (NDDB) to develop some of the affected areas as dairy hubs.
“Many people have also lost cattle. We are in discussion with the National Dairy Development Board if we can establish new milk processing centres there by providing cattle to the people and consequently developing those areas as milk processing hubs,” he said.
The proposed initiative is aimed at helping flood-affected families rebuild their livelihoods while creating self-sustaining communities with economic opportunities.
