GUWAHATI: The Assam government has clarified that a viral advisory claiming "Bhutan River: 3 Gates Opened" is false and not linked to the current rise in river water levels.

According to information received from Bhutan's Hydrology Department, the increased river flow is the result of heavy rainfall in upstream catchment areas, not sudden dam gate operations.
Officials stated that the Kurichhu Hydropower Plant carried out a controlled reservoir-flushing exercise on July 21 as part of routine maintenance. There are no unannounced or emergency water releases currently taking place.
The Bhutanese authorities also reiterated that all major dam operations follow established protocols, with downstream stakeholders informed well in advance through official channels.
Meanwhile, the Flood Control Rooms of Assam and Bhutan remain in constant coordination, sharing real-time updates on rainfall, river levels and any developments that could affect downstream areas.
The Assam government has urged citizens to rely only on official information and avoid circulating unverified flood alerts or rumours, adding that the situation is being closely monitored by the concerned authorities.
