Ranjeet Kumar Dass Elected Speaker of 16th Assam Legislative Assembly Unanimously


 

GUWAHATI: Senior BJP leader Ranjeet Kumar Dass was on Thursday, May 21, elected unanimously as the Speaker of the 16th Assam Legislative Assembly, becoming the first person to hold the post twice in the State’s legislative history.

He had earlier served as Speaker during the Sarbananda Sonowal-led Assam Government from 2016 to 2021, gaining significant experience in conducting Assembly proceedings and presiding over the House.

Congratulating Dass on X, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said the House would benefit greatly from his “insights and experience” and expressed confidence that he would conduct the Assembly smoothly while upholding the values and legacy of the Vidhan Sabha.

Sarma noted that Dass, who comes from a humble background, has had a long public career spanning multiple fields, including service as an IIS officer, journalism and public life.

The Chief Minister also highlighted Dass’s long association with the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) and later with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), stating that he has carried the spirit of public service since his early years.

As leader of the BJP Legislature Party, Sarma assured full cooperation to ensure the Assembly functions with “100 per cent productivity” during every session.
