Six Dead, Several Injured After Temple Wall Collapses in Maharashtra’s Sangli; PM Modi Condoles


 

GUWAHATI: At least six devotees, including children, lost their lives and over a dozen others sustained injuries after an under-construction wall collapsed inside a temple premises in Maharashtra’s Sangli district on Tuesday, May 12, amid strong winds and heavy rainfall.

According to the reports, devotees had gathered at the temple to offer prayers when sudden stormy weather swept through the area during the evening. As heavy winds intensified, several people reportedly took shelter beside a wall that was still under construction.

Moments later, an iron-sheet shed nearby was uprooted by the strong winds and crashed into the wall, causing it to collapse on the devotees standing beside it.

According to media reports, six people died on the spot, while around 20 others were injured in the incident. The injured were immediately shifted to nearby hospitals for treatment.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi condoled the loss of lives and expressed grief over the tragedy. In a post on X, he said he was deeply pained by the incident and extended his condolences to the bereaved families, while also praying for the speedy recovery of those injured.
