GUWAHATI: Abhijit Bhattacharya, former captain of the Indian volleyball team and the secretary of the Assam Volleyball Association, has been appointed as one of the selectors for the Indian national team ahead of the Asian Championship 2026.

He will be present at the selection camp scheduled to be held at the SAI centre in Ahmedabad on May 29 and June 1.
His appointment as one of the selectors for the Indian volleyball team has brought a sense of pride and enthusiasm among volleyball lovers in Assam.
Bhattacharya rose to prominence globally following the introduction of the Brahmaputra Volleyball League in Assam back in 2020 which aims to provide a platform for emerging players from rural areas to showcase their talent and hone their skills.
The former India Volleyball captain was named the Global Winner of the 2025 IOC Gender Equality, Diversity and Inclusion (GEDI) Champions Award by the International Olympic Committee, recognising his efforts to promote gender equality and grassroots sports in rural Assam.
The honour acknowledges Bhattacharya’s work in creating inclusive sports opportunities for children through community-driven volleyball initiatives that ensure equal participation for girls and boys.
