GUWAHATI: A special felicitation ceremony was organised by The Library in Guwahati on Saturday evening, May 9, to honour noted cultural organiser, environmental enthusiast, photographer and bonsai artist Labu Da for his longstanding contributions to the cultural and social landscape of the Northeast.

The event brought together eminent personalities, members of the organisation, cultural enthusiasts, admirers and family members to celebrate the legacy and achievements of the veteran figure, who is widely respected for his work in art, culture and environmental awareness.
As part of the programme, The Library presented Labu Da with a Citation of Honour in recognition of his decades-long dedication to promoting cultural activities and nurturing artistic talent in the region. The citation highlighted his instrumental role in organising the Regional Beat Contest in Shillong in 1967, an initiative credited with encouraging young musicians and strengthening youth culture during a transformative period in the Northeast.
The organisation also acknowledged his leadership in conducting the region’s first cycle rally in 1971, aimed at promoting community participation and social unity. His contribution to organising a beauty contest in 1974, which encouraged confidence and celebrated diversity, was also remembered during the event.
Speakers at the function described Labu Da as a multifaceted personality whose influence extends beyond cultural activities into environmental conservation and creative arts. Popularly known as the “Bonsai Man of Assam,” he was praised for his extraordinary passion for bonsai cultivation, intricate wood carving and photography.
Addressing the gathering, members of The Library said Labu Da’s lifelong work continues to inspire generations of artists, cultural organisers and environmental enthusiasts across the Northeast. They stressed the importance of recognising such personalities to preserve the region’s cultural heritage and motivate younger generations to contribute meaningfully to society.
