GUWAHATI: A third-year BTech student of the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Guwahati was found dead on the institute's campus on Sunday afternoon, July 26, in an incident that police suspect to be a case of suicide.

According to police, the incident occurred at around 2:30 PM. The student has been identified as Ritesh Raj Singh, a third-year BTech student from the Computer Science and Engineering department.
Preliminary reports suggest that the student allegedly jumped from the fifth floor of an academic building on the campus. He was declared dead following the incident.
Kamrup Police have launched an investigation and are treating the case as a suspected suicide. The exact circumstances leading to the student's death are yet to be established.
In a media statement issued on July 27, IIT Guwahati expressed deep sorrow over the student's untimely demise and said it is fully cooperating with the police investigation.
"The Institute is cooperating fully with the police, who are investigating the matter, and we are awaiting their findings before we share any further information on this matter," the statement said.
The institute added that the student's parents are on their way to the campus and that IIT Guwahati is in close contact with the family, providing all necessary support.
The institute also reiterated its commitment to students' mental health and wellbeing, highlighting the support available through its SAATHI Counselling Club and the Centre for Holistic Wellbeing. The institute said students have access to licensed counsellors, psychiatrists, round-the-clock online counselling, peer mentorship programmes and mandatory counselling interactions aimed at identifying signs of distress at an early stage.
The institute urged students facing emotional distress, or those concerned about a friend, to seek help through the available support systems, assuring that no student has to face difficult times alone.
