GUWAHATI: An EGPD team from Basistha Police Station conducted a special drive against the sale of tobacco products near educational institutions in the Sawkuchi area, close to NEF Law College. The drive also included checks against drunken driving.

Police said the sale of tobacco products was in violation of the Cigarettes and Other Tobacco Products Act (COTPA), 2003, which prohibits the sale of tobacco products in the vicinity of educational institutions.
During the operation, police seized 111 packets/boxes of cigarettes and 59 loose cigarettes of various brands, 12 packets of biri, 30 packets of tobacco (sadha), and more than 450 packets of gutkha, pan masala and jorda of various brands.
Legal action has been initiated against those found violating the law.
