Two Northeast Women Receive National Florence Nightingale Awards 2026


 

GUWAHATI: Two nursing professionals from the Northeast were among the 15 recipients of the National Florence Nightingale Awards 2026 presented by President Droupadi Murmu at Rashtrapati Bhavan on Tuesday, May 12, on the occasion of International Nurses Day.

The awardees from the region are Lalenthangi Hnamte from Mizoram and Madhu Mala Gurung from Sikkim, who were recognised for their exceptional contribution to community healthcare and nursing services in remote and tribal areas.

Lalenthangi Hnamte, an Auxiliary Nurse Midwife (ANM) serving at the Tuichawng AYUSH Health and Wellness Centre in Mizoram, was honoured for her 25 years of dedicated service in community healthcare. She worked in challenging hilly terrain, often travelling by foot and boat to ensure uninterrupted healthcare services.

The official citation noted that her unwavering commitment and selfless service significantly strengthened primary healthcare delivery in the region, earning her several letters of appreciation over the years.

Meanwhile, Madhu Mala Gurung, Senior Auxiliary Nurse Midwife at Rangpo Primary Health Centre under District Hospital Pakyong in East Sikkim, was recognised for her 38 years of service among tribal and indigenous communities.

Her contributions during the COVID-19 pandemic and natural disasters such as floods were specially acknowledged. The citation highlighted her disciplined, compassionate and patient-centric approach to healthcare, which earned appreciation from district and state health authorities.

Speaking on the occasion, President Murmu said nursing personnel “exemplify the highest standards of service” and play a crucial role in delivering quality healthcare, often under difficult circumstances.

Instituted in 1973 by the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, the National Florence Nightingale Awards recognise nursing professionals across the country for their meritorious service and dedication towards patient care.
