GUWHATI: A woman was allegedly kept confined inside her home for several months in Assam’s Bongaigaon district and subjected to mental harassment, following which she was rescued during an intervention by police, a magistrate and the Assam State Commission for Women on Tuesday, September 22.

The intervention followed a complaint filed by the woman’s family, who approached the authorities alleging that she had been confined inside the house and was not being allowed to leave the premises.
Acting on the complaint, a team comprising police personnel, a magistrate and members of the Assam State Commission for Women reached the residence in Bongaigaon town. The woman was rescued after the lock on the gate was broken during the operation.
According to the media reports, the rescue operation was led by Himani Adhikari, a member of the Assam State Commission for Women, which had taken up the complaint and visited the residence to look into the allegations.
The woman has alleged that her husband, Anshuman Kalita, had confined her to the house since February and subjected her to mental harassment during the period. She has also alleged that her husband’s brother was involved in keeping her confined and in the alleged harassment.
According to media reports, the woman and Kalita got married in 2022.
The allegations state that she remained inside the house for several months and was allegedly prevented from leaving the premises. Her family subsequently approached the authorities, leading to the intervention on Tuesday.
