GUWAHATI: The Government of Assam plans to provide scholarships to 100 students of the Indian Institute of Technology Guwahati, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said on Tuesday, September 1.

Sarma made the announcement while attending IIT Guwahati’s 33rd Foundation Day celebration on September 1, 2026. The event was held under the theme “Celebrating the Past, the Present and the Future.”
The Chief Minister asked the institute’s leadership and faculty to develop a framework for implementing the scholarship initiative. He also emphasised the need for IIT Guwahati to move beyond being an institution located in the Northeast to becoming an institution that works for the Northeast.
Speaking at the event, IIT Guwahati Director Prof. Devendra Jalihal said the institute was increasingly emerging as a knowledge partner for Assam and the Northeast, working with the government, industry, startups and civil society to address the region’s development challenges.
He said IIT Guwahati was committed to supporting Assam and the Northeast in areas including flood control, riverbank management, semiconductors, mineral processing, healthcare, technical education, skilling, innovation, startups and incubation.
The Foundation Day event was also attended by several former and senior IIT Guwahati officials, including Prof. R. C. Malhotra, Project Director and former Director of IIT Kanpur; Prof. D. N. Buragohain, Founder Director of IIT Guwahati; Prof. G. Biswas, former Director; and Prof. T. G. Sitharam, former Director, along with incumbent Director Prof. Devendra Jalihal.
