GUWAHATI: An 18-year-old woman was found dead in Jorhat under mysterious circumstances, with her family alleging suspicious involvement of her friends in the case.

According to the family, the woman had left home around 4:30 PM to visit the market along with a friend identified as Monalisa. Her mother spoke to her over the phone at around 8:30 PM, at which point she said she would be home soon.
However, at around 10 to 10:30 PM, the family received a call from an unidentified boy who informed them that the woman was unwell and that it was an emergency, asking them to come to Jorhat Medical College and Hospital (JMCH) immediately. The family rushed to the hospital, where they learned that she had died on the way.
The group that had brought her to the hospital reportedly fled the scene before the family arrived. The family has since filed an FIR at Rowriah Police Station, and police have launched an investigation into the matter.
The friends who were with the woman have been identified as Khusi and Monalisa. The family said the woman had previously stayed at a rehabilitation centre and had been stable since, but claimed that her friends have a history of substance addiction. The family has raised suspicion over the friends' involvement in the circumstances leading to her death.
Police are yet to issue any formal statement on the issue.
