The two were identified as self-styled “second lieutenant” Humenjyoti Baruah, 27, and “second lieutenant” Papu Moran, 30, both residents of Tinsukia district.

2 AK 56 rifles, 172 rounds of AK ammunition, 2 hand grenades, Medicine kit, backpacks and other war like stores, were seized from them, police said.

According to the police, preliminary findings indicate that ULFA(I) had allegedly assigned the two cadres to target civilians indiscriminately in Tinsukia town in an attempt to create fear among residents.

According to the police, the suspected modus operandi points to the possible influence of “external actors” seeking to “destabilise the region”.

Lawful action into the matter is being initiated accordingly and further investigation is going on in the matter, police said.
