GUWAHATI: Twenty-six dogs were rescued from a suspected dog meat trade in Bakalia, Karbi Anglong district of Assam, in an operation by Assam Police along with animal welfare organisations.

After the rescue, the dogs were transported to the Integrated Care and Resource Centre for Animal Welfare (JIRAW), run by the Just Be Friendly (JBF), where they are currently being looked after. JBF said the dogs are in good condition.
The organisation believes that some of the rescued animals may have been separated from their families and could be missing pets. It has now launched an appeal to trace their rightful owners and reunite them with their families.
"Their journey towards safety is not complete," JBF said in its statement, urging the public to come forward with any information that could help identify the animals.
Anyone who recognises any of the dogs, or knows someone who has been searching for a missing dog, has been asked to contact the JBF Helpline at 9706049580 immediately.
JBF has also appealed to people to share the information widely, saying even a single lead or phone call could help a family find their companion again.
"Together, let us give these innocent lives the chance to return home," the organisation said.
