26 Geckos Seized in Guwahati’s Betkuchi, Two Arrested


 

GUWAHATI: Two persons were apprehended and 26 live geckos were rescued during a raid conducted by police at Bathoupuri in Guwahati’s Betkuchi area on Thursday night, May 22.

The operation was carried out near Bathou Temple under the jurisdiction of Gorchuk Police Station following specific inputs regarding the illegal possession and transportation of geckos, locally known as “Keko”.

The accused have been identified as Md. Ikramul Hussain, a resident of Gerjaipam village in Nagaon district, and Md. Jamiruddin, a resident of Sonartari village in Barpeta district.

During the raid, police recovered 26 bamboo tubes, locally called “Sunga”, each wrapped with netting and cotton cloth. On inspection, every tube was found to contain one live gecko. A total of 26 live geckos were rescued from the possession of the accused persons.

The seized reptiles were taken into custody and necessary legal procedures have been initiated. Further investigation is underway.
