According to officials of Vizag One Town Police Station, a case has been registered and police have collected CCTV footage from the classroom, reports said. The footage reportedly shows the teacher slapping the child during the incident, which took place around 9 am.
A police official, as quoted in reports, said the boy began crying after being slapped several times and later collapsed unconscious in the teacher’s arms.
The teacher reportedly tried to revive him before seeking help, following which the child was taken to King George Hospital, where he died.
The child, identified as Pranay, had left home that morning in what appeared to be good health, according to his family. His father said Pranay had insisted on going to school and there was nothing unusual about his condition when he left home.
The family said they were informed around noon that something had happened to the boy. According to his father, the call did not come directly from the school but from local cooks working near the residence of the child’s maternal relative.
The family later sought information from the school and was shown CCTV footage. The father alleged that the footage showed the teacher frightening the child and hitting him with a stick, following which he collapsed.
The father also said a doctor informed the family that the child had died some time before reaching the hospital.
Police have registered a case and launched an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the boy’s death.
