GUWAHATI: Allegations of tampering with a court document involving Shyamkanu Mahanta have surfaced in Assam’s Baksa district, after a document sent by a fast-track court for obtaining his signature was allegedly replaced while in the custody of the jail authorities.

The matter has surfaced while investigation and legal proceedings are underway in connection with singer Zubeen Garg's death, a case in which Mahanta is among the accused.
According to information available, the original document was sent by the fast-track court to the Superintendent of Baksa District Jail through the prescribed legal process, with instructions to obtain Mahanta’s signature and return it to the court.
However, the document subsequently forwarded to the court by the jail authorities was reportedly found to be different from the original document sent by the court.
The discrepancy came to light when the document returned from the jail was compared with the original court record. This raised questions over how the document could have been replaced while it was in the custody of the jail authorities.
Taking note of the alleged discrepancy, the court directed an inquiry into the matter.
According to media reports, the Inspector General of Prisons has been instructed to investigate the circumstances surrounding the alleged tampering and determine how the mismatch occurred.
The prison authorities have also been directed to submit details of the action taken following the inquiry and provide the correct document to the court at the earliest.
