GUWAHATI: Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) candidate Chakradhar Gogoi has defeated Assam Jatiya Parishad (AJP) president Lurinjyoti Gogoi in the Khowang Assembly constituency, thereby causing a major electoral upset in the Assam Assembly Elections 2026.
Chakradhar Gogoi, the sitting MLA from the newly delimited seat, secured 67,038 votes, while Lurinjyoti Gogoi trailed with 57,054 votes. The BJP leader clinched the victory with a margin of 9,984 votes.
Among other contenders, independent candidates Biju Dowarah and Prabhakar Das garnered 4,361 and 1,761 votes respectively. A total of 2,003 voters chose the NOTA (None of the Above) option.
The result comes as a major setback for the AJP, which had been aiming to strengthen its presence in Upper Assam. Meanwhile, the BJP’s decisive win further consolidates its foothold in the region.
