Assam Focuses on Trade and Tourism Linkages Under Act East Policy: CM Meets EAM Jaishankar


 

GUWAHATI: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Sunday, May 31, held discussions with External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar in New Delhi, focusing on expanding Assam’s role in India’s Act East Policy and strengthening trade and tourism links with Southeast Asia.

The meeting, held at the External Affairs Minister’s official residence, centred on ways to boost regional connectivity, cross-border commerce and economic integration, with Assam being positioned as a strategic gateway for India’s outreach to neighbouring countries.

Sarma said the discussion provided key insights into India’s foreign policy direction and described Jaishankar’s views on global affairs and geopolitical challenges as “enlightening” in a post on social media platform X.

He also highlighted the need to further leverage Assam’s geographical advantage to deepen trade and tourism partnerships with neighbouring nations under the Act East framework.

The discussions come at a time when India is intensifying efforts to strengthen connectivity and economic engagement with Southeast Asia, with Assam expected to play a larger role in facilitating regional cooperation under the policy
